2024 Street Tree Initiative Info

When Hartland was developed in the 1980's, the main arteries of the neighborhood were planted with Pin Oak trees in the public right of way easement. Many side streets were also developed with a mono-culture of trees, some of which are no longer accepted under Lexington Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) Street Tree Guidelines. Several side streets were not developed to include any street trees.

The Hartland Street Tree Initiative was developed to restore and expand our tree canopy by assisting residents in need with planting street trees. Specifically, the program will:
  1. assist the homeowner in the selection of one tree appropriate for the planting location,
  2. plant one tree per property to homeowners selected for the program, and
  3. for residents with physical limitations or disabilities, assist with tree maintenance of these new trees.
The program is open to homeowners who request assistance based on financial hardship, physical limitation or disability, or extenuating circumstances. The homeowner may be asked to provide supporting documentation to confirm eligibility. The homeowner must occupy the Hartland property, must prepare the site to receive the new tree, and be responsible for ongoing maintenance of the new trees. Applications for the program are being accepted through August 30, 2024. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis and those meeting program guidelines will be approved until program funding is exhausted. Funding for the program is limited to approximately $20,000. Click here to view the online application. Paper applications are available in the office during regular office hours.
